These two medallions of Christ once decorated the sixth-century monumental cross that was found at or near Antioch in 1950.
The busts of Christ are set within a circle of large beads and conform to what is known as the Syrian type of Christ, with a triangular face and curly hair. But interestingly, only one has the characteristic short beard; the other is beardless.
The medallions were originally gilded; traces of gold leaf remain on the halo, garments, books and beads.
Sixth century AD, Antioch or Kaper Koraeon. Silver, diameter 5.25 in. and 5 in. Louvre Museum, Paris, inv. Bj 2258, Bj 2259.
