Disc with sphinx, from Antioch, Building 25-H. Dark grey stone, diameter 17-3/4 in.
The sphinx, in a Grecian form, may have hung between the colonnades of the peristyle gardens of the house called "Building 25-H," which also had statues of satyrs, nymphs, and a Silenos. Like many Greeks and Romans in Late Antiquity, the owners of this sphinx must have been enthralled by all things Egyptian.
