Hatay Archaeological Museum, Antakya
General view of the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey. The majority of mosaics excavated in Antioch are displayed here, but a significant number are displayed elsewhere.
What does "Hatay" refer to? At the time of the excavations in the 1930s, Antakya was the capital of the newly formed Hatay government, an Ottoman territory that had been put under the French mandate of Syria at the end of World War I. In 1939, the area joined Turkey, becoming the Hatay Province.
