This mosaic of a Dancing Maenad is one of a three-part composition with the Drinking Contest at its center; it was on the right side as one entered the Atrium House dining room.
A dancing maenad playing the cymbals is a standard type found in the Dionysias processions reproduced in all media of Roman art. Whirling on her toes on a strip of grey ground, she twists her body to the right while her head turns in toward the central panel. Her light blue chiton and brown mantle swirl in the motion of her dance, adding a graceful animation to the whole ensemble.
Early second century AD, Atrium House, Antioch. Baltimore Museum of Art, 33.52.1.
