Satellite Photo of Hagia Sophia
Satellite image of Hagia Sophia, from 1,450 feet above the domes. From this vantage point, the unique architectural layout of Hagia Sophia — a large main dome supported on four great pillars and side buttresses, with two half domes in each end — can be clearly seen. Hagia Sophia remains one of the largest church buildings in the world in terms of interior space. The three small domes at the lower part of the Hagia Sophia complex are mausoleums for sultans. At the top of the image is the former church of Hagia Eirene, "Holy Peace." Like the Hagia Sophia ("Holy Wisdom"), Hagia Eirene was originally built by Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century AD. Image © DigitalGlobe and Google.
