Nave of the Hagia Sophia looking back toward the imperial entrance.
In the middle of the photo is one of the four massive pillars that support the dome; the entire interior is sheathed in decorative marble. To the right of the pillar is one of two large marble urns from antiquity.
The Arabic calligraphy on the round wooden plaque atop the pillar bears the name of one of the four rightly-guided caliphs who succeeded the Prophet Muhammad.
Above the door is the west gallery, which affords an excellent view of the apse at the other end of the nave.
