Sacred Destinations
A richly illustrated guide to the world's sacred places,
historic religious sites, sacred art and religious architecture.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

On the southeast side of the Hagia Sophia stand three domed mausoleums of sultans, of which two are visible in this photo.

On the right is the Mausoleum of Murat III, who was buried here in 1599. He had sired 103 children by the time he died.

On the left is the Mausoleum of Selim II, designed by the architect Sinan and completed in 1577. The interior is entirely covered in Iznik tiles.

The Blue Mosque can be seen in the background.
