Sacred Destinations

An illustrated guide to sacred sites, pilgrimages, sacred art & architecture, historic religious places & more.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

One of two great marble urns in the nave of the Hagia Sophia, both of which date from Hellenistic or Roman times.

These urns may have held holy oil for anointing or water for ritual ablutions. There is a small spout in the side of the urn visible on the right side.

The urn looks deceptively small in this photo - it is several feet hight and is estimated to be able to hold 330 gallons (1,250 liters) of liquid.

See a photo of the other urn here.
