Mount Zion Baptist Church, Seattle
Baptists and Gospel-music fans are drawn to Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle, the home of Washington's largest African-American congregation, for powerful sermons and rousing song.
Mount Zion's first gatherings began in 1890, when its prayer meetings were held in private houses and a store. The church was incorporated in 1903, and after a number of moves, it settled into its current simple but sturdy brick building.
Eighteen stained-glass windows, each with an original design that honors a key African-American figure, glow within the sanctuary.
Beneath the bell tower, James Washington's sculpture The Oracle of Truth, a gray boulder carved with the image of a lamb, is dedicated to children struggling to find truth.
Mount Zion Baptist Church hosts Sunday worship services, Wednesday prayer services, classes, retreats, and regular radio broadcasts. See below for more information.
