The bishop's hall, where the bishop carried out his daily business and ate with his retinue. The bishop would have sat behind a table at the far end of the hall shown in this photo. This area was covered with a wooden canopy supported by a line of five carved corbels set into the end wall. One of these survives, in the left-hand corner. The hall was well-lit, with windows glazed above and shuttered below, and it was kept nice and warm by a large fireplace on the courtyard wall (left). The wooden roof trusses were supported by carved corbels of serene human faces (right). The room on the other side of this wall is the bishop's solar.
