Photo of Bishop's Solar Sign, Bishop's Palace, St. Davids

« Previous

A Welsh Heritage sign in the bishop's solar, decorated by nature. The sign reads:

The solar was the bishop's private chamber where only his closest colleagues and friends would be invited. Here he would have sat, read, worked on his papers and taken some of his less-public meals.

Originally open to the roof, this is the one part of the palace which was altered later in the Middle Ages. At some time a floor was inserted into the sockets visible below the wall tops, creating an upper room, though it would have partly blocked the main courtyard window.
