The bishop's hall, where the bishop carried out his daily business and ate with his retinue. The bishop would have sat behind a table at the far end of the hall shown in this photo. This area was covered with a wooden canopy supported by a line of five carved corbels set into the end wall. One of these survives, in the left-hand corner. The hall was well-lit, with windows glazed above and shuttered below, and it was kept warm by a large fireplace on the courtyard wall (left). The wooden roof trusses were supported by carved corbels of serene human faces (right).
