Sacred Destinations

An illustrated guide to sacred sites, pilgrimages, sacred art & architecture, historic religious places & more.

Photo Gallery: St David's Cathedral

The hillside cemetary, medieval gateway (see last photo) and octagonal bell tower as seen from the south side of St. David's Cathedral. The cathedral was built down here in this low-lying area to keep out of sight of marauders arriving by sea. (The cathedral was nevertheless ransacked over a dozen times.)

The cathedral's position in this hollow has two consequences today: only the tower of the grand structure can be seen from the town; and many parts of the cathedral have a significant lean due to the soft and sloping site on which it stands.
