Photo Gallery: St David's Cathedral

Towers of the west front of St. David's Cathedral, dating from the late 19th century. (See this photo for a more general view.) The ongoing instability of the structure led to a severe outward lean in the west front, and it was rebuilt numerous times. This final form replaces an earlier design in the Gothic Revival style by architect John Nash in 1793.

The west front as it stands today was commissioned by Sir George Gilbert Scott, who also repaired the tower, refurbished the presbytery, and restored the roof. Scott dedicated the new west front to the memory of Connop Thirlwall, a distinguished scholar and bishop of St. David's 1840-74 who had begun the restoration work.
