Kolocep Island Churches
Kolocep is the nearest of the Elaphite Islands to Dubrovnik and has been a popular summer retreat for city dwellers since the 16th century. It is dotted with a number of interesting pre-Romanesque churches in various states of decay.
What to See
Most of the island, which is only a square mile in size, is covered in trees and scenic subtropical undergrowth. You can walk between Donje Celo village on the northwest side and Gornje Celo on the southwest side in less than an hour, unless you are lured off the path to explore Kolocep's olive groves and church ruins.
Kolocep Island's churches of St. Anthony and St. Nicholas, among others, have pre-Romanesque origins. The Parish Church of Kolocep dates from the 15th century.
