Ely Cathedral: Nave Vault

Nave Vault

Upper walls and vault of the Romanesque nave (1189), with Victorian painted wood ceiling (1858). The ceiling was painted by two gifted amateurs, Henry Styleman le Strange and his friend Thomas Gambier Parry. They painted the ceiling in situ, on their backs on scaffolding in poor light, like Michelangelo.
