Legend of Saint Francis 5: Renunciation of Worldly Goods
Legend of Saint Francis 5: Renunciation of Worldly Goods. One of 28 frescoes in a series by Giotto in the Upper Church (1297-99). When Francis' father accuses his son before the episcopal tribune of squandering his fortune, Francis returns to him even the clothes he is wearing and repudiates him. Giotto enhances the decisiveness of this public separation by means of the two groups of people and buildings on opposite sides.
