Basilica di San Francesco: View of Frescoes of Lower Church from Apse Looking Back to Nave

View of Frescoes of Lower Church from Apse Looking Back to Nave

View of the frescoes of the Lower Church from the apse looking back toward the nave. On either side are two panoramic scenes of the Crucifixion: the one on the left by the school of Giotto, the one on the right by Pietro Lorenzetti. Cimabue's fresco of the Madonna Enthroned with the Child, St Francis and Four Angels is seen to the left of the nave. This was later surrounded by the frescoes of the school of Giotto. The frescoes in the cross vault over the high altar have allegories of the Franciscan virtues and St Francis in Glory by the school of Giotto. Photo: Web Gallery of Art.
