Right Tympanum: Madonna with Peter and Paul

Tympanum of the right portal in the upper atrium, depicting the Madonna and Child with St. Peter and St. Paul. The Christ Child is shown handing the keys to heaven to St. Peter. This portal is the only surviving medieval part of the facade, dating from 1395. The Latin inscription reads: "The master Simon of this town did this work in honor of Saint Michael Archangel in 1395." It was commissioned by Queen Margaret, who is probably the small praying figure on the right. Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel, Monte Sant'Angelo, Puglia, Italy. The Archangel Michael is said to have appeared here in 490, 492 and 1656.
