Internal Atrium
The internal atrium, lined with tombs and memorials and leading to the Romanesque door into the grotto. Above the door is a Latin inscription recording St. Michael's words to Bishop Lawrence Maiorano: "In all the space of this cavern the sins of men are forgiven. This is a special abode where all guilt is washed away." Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel, Monte Sant'Angelo, Puglia, Italy. The Archangel Michael is said to have appeared here in 490, 492 and 1656.
