Episcopal Throne (c.1040): Detail

Romanesque episcopal throne dating from the period when Leone, a native of Monte Sant'Angelo, was Archbishop of Siponto-Gargano (1023-50). The panel seen here, showing St. Michael spearing the dragon. Scholars believe this panel is even older than the throne. Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel, Monte Sant'Angelo, Puglia, Italy. The Archangel Michael is said to have appeared here in 490, 492 and 1656.
