Slab from St. Paul's Tomb (Replica)
Replica of the marble slab placed over the tomb of Saint Paul in the Constantinian period (early 4th century). It measures 2.12 x 1.27 m and was about 4.5 m above St. Paul's sarcophagus. A new censer was placed through the round hole on the festival day of the saint each year. The rectangular openings, cut later than the round one, were used to introduce objects into the saint's tomb, which pilgrims could then bring home for veneration. Displayed in San Paolo fuori le Mura (St. Paul Outside the Walls), Rome, Italy.
