Santa Prassede: Mosaic in Lunette over Door of Chapel of St. Zeno

Mosaic in Lunette over Door of Chapel of St. Zeno

Mosaic in the lunette over the door of the Chapel of St. Zeno, depicting the Harrowing of Hell (Anastasis), a motif fit for the funerary chapel that this was. With an angel, Christ is breaking down the gates of Hell to rescue Adam and Eve (right) and other Old Testament figures waiting for him. This motif first appears in the 7th century, and became very popular in Rome in the next two centuries.
