Fountains Abbey: Looking NE in Chapel of Nine Altars

Looking NE in Chapel of Nine Altars

Looking northeast in the Chapel of the Nine Altars. The chapel marks the height of the prosperity of Fountains Abbey in the early 13th century. The weight of the Early English stone vaulting threatened the fabric of the original chapel, and in the 1480s Abbot Darnton replaced the vaults with wooden roofs (now gone), and inserted the huge Perpendicular window in the east wall.
