Senanque Abbey: Across the Wheat Field

Across the Wheat Field

View of the 12th-century Abbey of Senanque from north. On the left is the chevet, with a main apse flanked by two apsidoles on each side. The tall rectangular structure in the center is the sacristy. Extending to the right are the chapter house (with close-set windows) and warming house (with chimneys). Nestled in a valley in Provence famed for its lavender fields, the Cistercian Abbey of Senanque was founded in 1148. The austere and harmonious church, built in the Romanesque style, was consecrated in 1178.
