San Lorenzo fuori le Mura: Behind the Tomb of St. Lawrence

Behind the Tomb of St. Lawrence

View from behind (to the east) of the tomb of St. Lawrence, a Roman deacon martyred in 258 AD. His resting place has not been moved since his burial: the catacombs around it were cut away to provide access and the church was built over it. The present design of the tomb area dates from the 13th century. Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura (Saint Lawrence outside the Walls), Rome, Italy.
