With a population of about 1.2 million, Islamabad is the 10th largest city in Pakistan but its greater metropolitan area is the 3rd largest, with over 4.5 million residents. Islamabad is home to the Faisal Mosque, the largest mosque in South Asia. The area around Islamabad has been inhabited since the Stone Age but the city itself was constructed from scratch in 1958 as the new capital of Pakistan.
