View of Minbar in Hagia Sophia
View of the minbar in the Hagia Sophia, located to the right of the mihrab in the apse. A minbar is a pulpit used by the imam to give the Friday sermon in a mosque. Hagia Sophia's minbar was installed by Sultan Murat III (1574-95). High in the apse is a 9th-century Byzantine mosaic of the Virgin and Child, the oldest surviving mosaic in the Hagia Sophia.
