Grotto of St. Paul, Ephesus
The Grotto of St. Paul (or Cave of St. Paul) is a cave in the slope of Bülbüldag in Ephesus. The cave is a Christian holy place in which excavators have found 500 graffiti and inscriptions, dating from the 5th to the early 20th century, on partially uncovered frescoes. Most of these texts are invocations, in particular to the apostle Paul, but also God, Christ, Mary, and other saints.
The traces of writing have been copied onto plastic film and will be eventually be computer-scanned for publication.
