Alter Dom (Old Cathedral), Linz
Although it is no longer the cathedral of Linz, Alter Dom is still known as the Old Cathedral and it remains the largest Baroque church in the city.
The church was constructed by the Jesuits between 1669 and 1678 and dedicated to St. Ignatius, the founder of their order (the church is also known as the Ignatiuskirche). It served as the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Linz from 1785 to 1909.
Don't judge this church by its relatively simple exterior: the inside warms up considerably with pink marble columns, an intricately carved pulpit, and lots of statues. The high altar is bedecked with marble images.
Anton Bruckner was the church organist for 12 years, and the annual Bruckner Festival is centered here. The festival also honors two other composers: Mozart, who composed his Linz Symphony (no. 36) at the building now housing the Linz tourist office (Hauptplatz 1), and Beethoven, who composed part of his Eighth Symphony in Linz.
