Antwerp

Antwerp (Antwerpen in Flemish) is a major Belgian city of about 450,000 people, located 48km (30 miles) north of Brussels and 51km (31 miles) northeast of Ghent.

Antwerp is justly famous as the "Diamond Center of the World" — Antwerp is the leading market for cut diamonds and second only to London as an outlet for raw and industrial diamonds. The vast majority of diamond workers of Antwerp are part of the city's thriving Orthodox Jewish community. But Antwerp is much more than diamonds: it is a stylish European city filled with the monuments of a wealthy medieval and Renaissance period. Antwerp boasts a magnificent cathedral, as well as a museum of Flemish art masterpieces, a maze of medieval streets, and a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene.

Sacred Sites and Religious Places

Antwerp Cathedral
Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal)
Built from 1352 to 1520, Antwerp's magnificent Gothic cathedral is the pride of the city. It is the largest church in the Low Countries and houses four original Rubens masterpieces.
Main Synagogue, Antwerp
Jewish Quarter/Diamond Quarter
Antwerp is still home to a thriving Jewish community, most of whom are ultra-Orthodox and work in the diamond industry.
Jesuit Church, Antwerp
St. Carolus Borromeus Church
Built 1615-21 by the Jesuits, this very Baroque church was partially designed by Peter Paul Rubens. Its splendid facade and opulent interior have earned it the nickname "Marble Temple."
Jacobskerk, Antwerp
St. James Church (St Jacobskerk)
Originally an inn for pilgrims on the road to Santiago, this parish church was greatly enlarged by wealthy merchants in 1491. It is best known for sheltering the tomb of the artist Peter Paul Rubens.
