Asamkirche (St Johann-Nepomuk), Munich
Officially named St. Johann-Nepomuk-Kirche, this Rococo church in Munich is more commonly known as Asamkirche (Asams' Church) after its builders.
History
In 1729-30, sculptor and stuccoist Egid Qurin Asam bought two properties that he intended to convert to a family home for himself. He subsequently acquired a plot of land next to these properties, where he wished to build a church dedicated to the honor of the newly canonized St. John Nepomuk, a 14th-century Bohemian monk who drowned in the Danube.
At the same time, Asam's brother Cosmas Damian Asam bought a piece of land on which he built the presbytery. The church building is joined to the home of Egid Quirin Asam by a corridor; the artist could see the main altar from one of his bedrooms.
What to See
Asamkirche is a small but unique church featuring a rare and striking unity of style. In the church's dimly lit interior, with its uniquely shaped single nave, no surface is left undecorated. A burst of frescoes is surrounded by rich red stucco and lavishly gilded woodwork, a superb illustration of the Bavarian passion for ornamentation.
Despite the many decorates vying for the visitor's attention, the eye is irresistibly drawn to the altar, which features a sculpted group of the Holy Trinity.
