Sacred Sites and Religious Places

Acropolis Museum
This fine archaeological museum displays a fantastic collection of classical sculptures, most dating from the heyday of Athens (5th century BC).
Agios Nikólaos Ragavás Church
An attractive 11th-century church in Plaka that is often used for weddings.
Areopagus (Mars Hill)
This bald marble hill approached by slippery marble steps was once home to the Athenian council and court, where St. Paul spoke on the behalf of "the Unknown God."
Erechtheion
The ancient Athenians honored this lovely temple as the tomb of Erechtheus, a legendary king of Athens. It also stands on the site of a divine battle between Poseidon and Athena over who the city would be named after.
Jewish Museum of Greece
This museum displays articles of Jewish daily life and religious ceremony, including children's toys and special Passover china. There is also an impressive reconstruction of the Patras synagogue.
Mikrí Mitropolí
This tiny church used to be the cathedral of Athens and is dedicated to the "Virgin Who Answers Prayers Quickly." Fragments of classical artifacts are built into the walls.
Mitrópoli (Cathedral)
This 19th-century cathedral is not as attractive on the outside as the Mikri Mitropoli next to it, but it is grand in scale and beautifully decorated inside.
Parthenon
The famous Temple of Athena Parthenos, built in 440 BC, crowns the Acropolis. It was a major sacred site and is considered one of the finest examples of Greek architecture anywhere.
Temple of Athena Nike
An elegant and beautifully proportioned little Ionic temple built in 424 BC.
Temple of Olympian Zeus
Completed by Hadrian after centuries of construction, this was one of the largest temples in the ancient world.
Temple of Poseidon
Overlooking the sea from atop the sheer cliffs of Cape Sounion, the Temple of Poseidon was built in 444 BC to the god of the sea.
